Austin’s elected leaders definitely gave a show to the Fox News reporters who showed up to City Council on Thursday. Although I don’t think it was a show that they expected. In fact, I’m told one of them fell asleep at one point during the two-hour debate over which symbolic resolution in support of increasing police staffing to approve.
In theory, Council is supposed to end at 10 p.m. They regularly go long past that, however. The last meeting ended at 12:17 a.m. If they’d skipped the resolution about police staffing, they might have been able to meet their aspirational bedtime. And there would have been exactly the same number of police officers.
