Austin’s Richard Overton, who for many years was the oldest World War II veteran and more recently was the oldest American, died yesterday at 112.
I never met him, but by all accounts he seemed to do old age about as well as anybody could hope, enjoying cigars and whiskey on his own front porch until the very end. Or at least pretty close to the very end, since I looked up his address on Google Maps and found this image from his longtime home on Hamilton Street:
That’s definitely Mr. Overton. Since his face is blurred out, it’s not clear whether he’s holding a cigar or simply scratching his chin, but either way, it looks like he’s making the most of his 113th year on earth.
The previous street view available is from May 2017, where he appears to be with company:
The light quality is not great in the original photo taken of his house, in October of 2007. However, I’m pretty sure the blurry figure on the porch is Mr. Overton at a spry 101.
