Single Stair Passes

City Council voted 10-1 on Thursday to legalize single-stair developments up to five stories. Such developments will be limited to four units per floor. You can read more about the issue here.

A painful redevelopment in Northwest Hills

Occasionally there are upzonings that cause even the most devout YIMBY heartburn. In general, such cases involve the redevelopment of existing low-cost apartments.

On Thursday, residents and allies of the Acacia Cliffs Apartments, a 50-year-old complex just west of Mopac and north of Far West Blvd, showed up at City Council to bemoan a rezoning that will allow their homes to be replaced by a much bigger complex.

Currently, Acacia advertises 1-bedroom apartments at $840-900 and 2BR units at $1,150. That's a good deal anywhere in Austin, but it's tremendous west of Mopac.
