Election-proof land reforms
Politicians come and go. The code stays the same.
A case at Planning Commission last week demonstrated the enduring benefit of Affordability Unlocked, the five-year-old density bonus program that makes it much easier to build income-restricted housing throughout the city.
At issue is a proposed 438-unit mixed-income apartment complex by Manifold RE at 8413 Southwest Parkway. The project depends on both federal low income tax credits and Affordability Unlocked, which requires at least half of the units to be priced affordably for those at or below 60% of the area median income.
Many of the surrounding neighbors are vehemently opposed to the project, arguing that the area is too environmentally sensitive to handle such an intense project.
