The chief question
The next leader of APD is unlikely to be a big reformer.
You may be aware that the city of Austin is in the final stages of picking a new police chief, but that is no thanks to me. I have not dedicated nearly enough attention to this story, and for that you should blame Canada.
There is a community meeting tonight at the Palmer Event Center where you can ask questions of the two finalists from 6-8 pm. You can also watch it live online at ATXN.
And this afternoon both finalists sat down for interviews with Austin Police Association president Michael Bullock. You can watch it on YouTube here. I will watch later and comment on it tomorrow.
City Manager T.C. Broadnax has indicated he will likely make his final pick next week, which Council will have to confirm.
To catch you up to speed, out of dozens of applicants from around the country, Broadnax has narrowed it down to two candidates: Milwaukee Police Chief Jefferey Norman and Cincinnati Assistant Chief Lisa Davis.
So far, it sounds like both the cops and criminal justice reform types are unimpressed with the options.
