Who's scared of a single stair?
The fire dept hates this one neat housing trick.
Happy Back-to-School Week! My kid is starting kindergarten tomorrow and fortunately we live within walking distance of school, since our car is still in the shop. Turns out that a bearing came loose and somehow damaged both the clutch and the transmission. The latter casualty only became apparent after $1,500 of labor. I'll say it again: there's no such thing as a cheap car.
An inferno of hysteria over single-stair apartments
In recent decades in Austin, the housing options have tended towards go big or go [single-family] home. It's not just that our zoning has historically made it very hard to build townhomes, triplexes and other forms of "missing middle" housing, but our code has essentially mandated that apartment buildings be really, really big.
You see, apartment buildings here are required to have two stairwells connected by one corridor. The idea is justified in fire safety terms –– there need to be two exit points.
